Spoken Word Artist
Not only is Ms. China a Writer and Director, her skills as a Poetess are remarkable. Ms. China’s appearances as a “Featured Headline Poet” in various poetry venues have made her known as a woman who tackles the issues no one wants to talk about. In 2000 and 2001 she collaborated with US Bank African American Reflections Poetry to provide writing opportunities for elementary and high school youth. In 2011, the Las Vegas Black Music Awards gave her the honor of Spoken Word Artist of the Year. Currently, Ms. China is touring to promote her Spoken Word CD Phoenix Rising.
Arts and Education
In a continued effort to provide educational awareness through the Arts, as an African Dance Instructor and a member of Olabisi African Dance & Drum Ensemble she is committed to maintaining African culture and tradition through drumming and dancing. She has been a guest instructor at University of Las Vegas-Nevada and throughout the Clark County School District. Ms. China oversees After School Fitness in a partnership with the Las Vegas Urban League-21st Century Program. She also has been a guest facilitator and performer for the College of Southern Nevada for their African American History Programming and Diversity Day.
Community Programming
As part of her dedication to the Las Vegas community, Ms. China has facilitated numerous community programs. In 2004, she co-founded Sisters In Society Taking Action Girls Rite of Passage Program for young girls ages 10-16 which has graduated over 100 young girls into womanhood. Ladies for Change Lifestyle Transition Program is the second phase of the Rite of Passage program that is geared toward young women ages 17-22 as they make the transition into adulthood. Both programs provide life skill workshops in attitude, financial literacy, positive self body image, sexuality, health and the importance of community. In addition to mentoring, Ms. China is involved in the annual programming of the African American History Celebrations for the City of Las Vegas West Las Vegas Cultural Arts Center and the Las Vegas Clark County Library District West Las Vegas Library Theater. For the past 10 years Ms. China has sat on the committee for the West Las Vegas Cultural Arts Center Women's Day program, which promotes unity and diversity for the women of Las Vegas by providing a day of networking, education, and empowerment. In 2009 Ms. China was the recipient of Channel 13 (Las Vegas) Jefferson Award. The Jefferson Award is a prestigious national and local award that recognizes individuals throughout the country who perform great public service, largely without recognition.
